Fitrana, also known as Zakat al-Fitr, is a compulsory charity that must be given before the Eid prayer at the end of Ramadan. It purifies the fasts of the one who gives it and ensures that those in need can celebrate Eid with dignity and happiness.
Every Muslim who has food beyond their basic needs is required to give Fitrana, either for themselves or on behalf of each household member, including children and infants.
The purpose of Fitrana is twofold: to make up for any shortcomings in fasting and to provide food for the poor before Eid.
“The Messenger of Allahﷺ prescribed Zakat al-Fitr as purification for the fasting person from idle talk and wrongdoing, and as food for the poor.”
— Abu Dawud & Ibn Majah
